EUMETSAT provides comprehensive support to developing countries, in particular Africa.

Our major contributions to date are the biennial EUMETSAT User Forum in Africa, the Provision of Meteosat Second Generation in Africa (PUMA) project, the African Monitoring of the Environment for Sustainable Development (AMESD) initiative and the training of African users. Currently our main focus is on the Monitoring of Environment and Security in Africa (MESA) project and on the elaboration of the GMES Africa initiative.

Further information about EUMETSAT's assistance to developing countries
MESA
The “Monitoring of Environment and Security in Africa” programme (MESA) builds on the results obtained in PUMA and AMESD and will be a first contribution to the GMES Africa initiative of the EU-Africa Joint Strategy. MESA will consolidate and widen the operational environmental services developed in AMESD, and propose new services, such as African Climate Services.
GMES Africa
Following the Maputo Declaration, the GMES Africa initiative is now being elaborated within the framework of the EU-Africa Strategic Partnership on “Science, Information Society and Space”, following the Lisbon Process for GMES and Africa.
AMESD
The African Monitoring of the Environment for Sustainable Development (AMESD) initiative takes the Preparation for Use of MSG in Africa (PUMA) project a stage further by extending the operational use of Earth observation technologies and data to environmental and climate monitoring applications.
PUMA
The Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) of satellites has been the catalyst for the Preparation for Use of MSG in Africa (PUMA) project, an international collaborative venture which provides the continent’s National Meteorological and Hydrological Services with operational access to state-of-the-art satellite data, products and technology.
Projects in Africa
In addition to its contribution to AMESD and the GMES Africa initiative, EUMETSAT is supporting and is involved in various projects funded by the Seventh Framework Programme for research and technological development (FP7) and supporting GEOSS.
AUC, ACMAD, AGRHYMET, ASECNA
EUMETSAT also has formal agreements with four African organisations: the African Union Commission (AUC), the African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD), AGRHYMET Regional Centre (ARC), and Agency for the Safety of Aerial Navigation in Africa (ASECNA).
User Forum
The purpose of the Forum is to reinforce the well established dialogue between EUMETSAT and the African user community to optimise the use of EUMETSAT satellite data and products throughout the continent. The Forum also provides the opportunity to identify actions and initiatives that, subject to resources, could be taken by EUMETSAT to meet the requirements of its African partners.
