GSICS

Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS)


The Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System ( GSICS ) is an initiative of CGMS and WMO, which aims to ensure consistent calibration and inter-calibration of operational meteorological satellite instruments. EUMETSAT is one of the founding partners in GSICS, along with other national agencies responsible for operational weather satellites, under the coordination of WMO Detailed technical information on GSICS, including operational inter-calibration results, meeting news, technical documentation and scientific reports, is provided at the GSICS Coordination Centre.

EUMETSAT is concentrating on data from the current operational satellite instruments for which it is responsible (the geostationary Meteosat series and polar-orbiting Metop). Initial effort has been concentrated on the infrared channels of the SEVIRI , IASI and HIRS instruments. It is planned to extend this to channels in the solar-reflected band and inter-calibrations with instruments on satellites operated by our partner institutes. Developments are also underway to reprocess the full archive of Meteosat data using HIRS as a reference in support of EUMETSAT’s Climate Monitoring activities.
