Basic Meteorological Data

Access Conditions

Access to BMD is restricted to the WMO members (National Meteorological Services and partner organisations) of the WMO Regional Association VI. To access this service, users are requested to register on the [External link]EO Portal. EUMETCast access is dependent upon operating a reception station fitted with a [Internal link]EUMETCast Key Unit (EKU). The EKU, along with the [Internal link]EUMETCast Client Software, are available from EUMETSAT.

Service Monitoring

DWD, acting on behalf of WMO, is responsible for ensuring that the BMD content is delivered to the [Internal link]EUMETCast uplink and to EUMETSAT for Direct Dissemination. Announcements regarding changes to BMD will be made to the user community by DWD. All comments or questions regarding content of BMD should be addressed to the DWD Regional Telecommunications Hub contact (details below).

EUMETSAT is responsible for ensuring that BMD products are successfully transmitted via EUMETCast and Direct Dissemination. Service outages relating to the delivery on EUMETCast and Direct Dissemination are announced by EUMETSAT.

The Basic Meteorological Data (BMD) Service within the WMO Regional Association VI contains a set of data specific for this region, which is multicast via the EUMETCast system. The data contains data such as SYNOP, TEMP, PILOT, Warnings and Tropical Cyclone data as well as forecast data in GRIB format from the [External link]European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) and [External link]Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). In addition, charts of WAFS, Aerological Diagrams, basic meteorological field parameters and observations are disseminated in graphical representation.
