EUMETSAT at Expo 2010
The EUMETSAT Director-General, Dr. Lars Prahm, is participating in the honour day ceremony of the MeteoWorld Pavilion at World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China, on 9 May 2010.
He will also attend and give a presentation to the “Symposium on Meteorological Service Delivery and Disaster Risk Reduction” organised in parallel by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) on 9-10 May 2010.
A specially constructed pavilion dedicated to meteorology, the “MeteoWorld Pavilion”, has been organised by CMA and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) at Expo 2010. EUMETSAT has provided the pavilion with various display materials such as satellite models, video footage, satellite imagery and promotional items.
At the honour day ceremony, Dr. Prahm will acknowledge the excellent opportunity presented by Expo 2010 to demonstrate to the public at large the benefits of meteorological data. Moreover, he will underline the importance of taking into account user requirements and how essential international cooperation is for meteorological and climate monitoring. He will also give an overview of EUMETSAT’s contribution to disaster risk reduction through its long-term satellite programmes, accurate data and the enlarged scope covering monitoring of the ocean, climate and atmospheric chemistry.
During the CMA symposium, Dr. Prahm will make a presentation at the session addressing the “Vision for the future meteorological service delivery and disaster risk reduction” on 10 May 2010. He will explain what EUMETSAT will do for future meteorological service delivery contributing to disaster risk reduction, mitigation and adaptation, such as:
-
assuring the long-term continuity of its satellite programmes;
-
ensuring that data and products are properly calibrated and validated;
-
listening to user requirements (of its Member and Cooperating States and taking into account recommendations of the WMO);
-
focusing its efforts on the provision of continuous and enhanced satellite data for the oceanography, atmosphere, climate and global land user communities; and
-
continuing to seek the global partnerships essential to ensure that the right data is received in a timely matter, in the right place, and for the best value for money.
