EUMETSAT 70th Council puts MTG on track
EUMETSAT, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, held its 70th Council meeting in Rome, Italy, on 21-22 June 2010.

MTG satellites crucial for future volcanic ash observations
Following the recent eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjälla volcano that spewed huge amounts of ash and grounded numerous flights across Europe, more than 50 experts from around the world came together at a workshop hosted by ESA and EUMETSAT to take stock of what has been learned and to identify future opportunities for volcanic ash detection, monitoring and prediction.

EUMETCast broadcasts RETIM for Météo-France
EUMETCast, EUMETSAT’s broadcast system for meteorological and environmental data, is now disseminating RETIM data for Météo-France on a fully operational basis, replacing the RETIM2000 system.

EUMETSAT Special Council supports MTG
The EUMETSAT Special Council meeting in Darmstadt, Germany, on 26 March voted in favour of the Programme Proposal and Programme Resolution for Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) with two Member States reserving their vote which is expected no later than 30 June.

Global sea level rise monitoring secured for next decade
The transatlantic Jason-3 Programme has now been approved by EUMETSAT Member States thus ensuring a continuation of the series of measurements made by the Jason-2 satellite and its predecessors in support of meteorology, operational oceanography and in particular the monitoring of the sea level trend, a key indicator of climate change.

Météo-France Centre on La Réunion integrated into EARS
The Météo-France Centre on La Réunion, which is in charge of cyclone warnings for the south-western part of the Indian Ocean, recently installed a new antenna allowing it to receive data from EUMETSAT’s Metop-A and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s NOAA-17, -18 and -19 polar-orbiting satellites.
