MSG-2 successfully launched
The second of EUMETSAT’s new generation weather satellites, MSG-2 was successfully launched from Kourou, French Guiana on an Ariane-5 GS launcher (flight V169) at 22:33 UTC (23:33 CET; 19:33 Kourou time).

GEO II Meeting in Geneva
At the second Group on Earth Observations (GEO) meeting in Geneva, 14-15 December 2005, the GEO plenary endorsed a proposal to create a global dissemination system using commercial broadcast satellites.

EUMETSAT signs contract with Globecast Spain to extend data dissemination to South America
A contract was signed today with Globecast Spain, the telecommunications provider selected to extend the dissemination of Meteosat Second Generation data to South America as of April 2006.

EUMETSAT Welcomes a new Cooperating State - Iceland signs Cooperating State Agreement
Iceland has become the twelfth Cooperating State of EUMETSAT, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites through an agreement signed this morning in Rejkjavik by Dr. Lars Prahm, the Director General of EUMETSAT, and Mrs. Sigridur Anna Thordardottir, Minister of the Environment.

European Space Council recognise role of EUMETSAT
The third Space Council, a joint and concomitant meeting of the European Space Agency Council at ministerial level and of the European Union Competitiveness Council, was held in Brussels on the 28th November and endorsed the orientations necessary to pave the way ahead on GMES.

NOAA relying on cooperation with EUMETSAT
The importance of EUMETSAT Polar-orbiting satellites for weather forecasting was highlighted in a speech held by Gregory W. Withee at EUMETSAT’s 58th Council in Darmstadt. Greg Withee, NOAA’s Assistant Administrator for Satellite and Information Services (USA), also emphasised the importance of future cooperation in the context of a possible expansion of EUMETCast towards a global dissemination scheme

MSG-2 Satellite ready for launch on 21 December 2005
Arianespace has confirmed Wednesday, 21 December as new launch date for MSG-2. The satellite is to be launched on an Ariane GS 5 launcher (flight number V169) from Kourou, French Guyana at 22:33 UTC (23:33 CET; 19:33 Kourou time).

Metop Launch Date confirmed
The launch date of Europe’s first polar-orbiting meteorological satellite has been confirmed for 30 June 2006. The first in the series of “Metop” satellites (to be called Metop-A once in orbit) will be launched on a Soyuz launcher from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan into a polar orbit with an altitude of 837 km and a 09:30 equator local crossing time (descending node).

Jason-2 Radome and Antenna to be Installed at Usingen Earth Terminal Today
Work on Jason-2 Ground System on Schedule. The Jason-2 Ocean Altimetry Programme is moving ahead with today’s installation of the radome and antenna at the programme’s Earth Terminal in Usingen, Germany.
