Estonia joins EUMETSAT community of nations
In a ceremony held at EUMETSAT this morning, Dr Lars Prahm, Director-General of EUMETSAT and the Estonian Minister for the Environment Mr Rein Randver signed an agreement which makes Estonia the third Baltic State to join EUMETSAT as Cooperating State. This agreement will enter into force on the date of its signature.

Croatia officially joins EUMETSAT Community of Member States
Today EUMETSAT was officially notified by the Depositary of the EUMETSAT Convention that the Croatian parliament has ratified the accession agreement that makes Croatia the 20th full Member of EUMETSAT’s community of states.

First MetOp successfully launched
Today, Europe entered a new era of weather and climate monitoring when the first in the series of operational meteorological satellites in polar orbit, MetOp, was successfully launched from Baikonur, Kazakhstan on a Soyuz Fregat launcher at 16:28 UTC (18:28 CEST; 22:28 Baikonur time).

Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) extended to Africa
On the eve of EUMETSAT’s 7th African User Forum in Maputo, Mozambique, representatives from the African Union, of the ACP Secretariat and of the 5 African Regional Economic Groupings (CEMAC, ECOWAS, IGAD, IOC and, SADC) have signed a joint declaration calling the European Commission to plan for an extension of its Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) initiative to include Africa.

7th EUMETSAT User Forum in Africa, Maputo, Mozambique
The 7th EUMETSAT User Forum will take place in Maputo, Mozambique from 16 to 20 October. It is organised in cooperation with the National Meteorological Institute of Mozambique (INAM) and is part of EUMETSAT’s initiative to strengthen links with the user community in Africa.

EUMETSAT confirms Tuesday, 17 October as new launch date for MetOp, Europe's first operational polar orbiting weather satellite.

MetOp launch postponed
On Saturday 30 September the Upper Composite (comprising the MetOp spacecraft, the Fregat upper stage and the Soyuz fairing) experienced a slight mechanical shock. It was then decided to interrupt the launch campaign and return the Upper Composite to the clean room for inspection.

Inauguration of Jason-2 ground station
Today, the ground station for the new ocean observing satellite Jason-2, has been officially inaugurated in Usingen, Germany.
