New NPP CrIS and ATMS Sensor Data Records now available

Sensor Data Records from the CrIS and ATMS instruments onboard the Suomi NPP satellite are available on EUMETCast and GTS (starting 31 July 2012).

The Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) captures atmospheric temperature and water vapor information used to assess the atmosphere and predict weather.

The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) is producing higher spatial and vertical resolution data about the atmospheric temperature and water vapour.

The new products on EUMETCast are:

Important note: The data are presently for evaluation only. Once we have been informed by NOAA that the data are of 'provisional' maturity, we will inform the users that the data are ready for operational evaluation.
As the data sets' maturity evolves, we will, in coordination with NOAA, notify the users of these changes. The users should also be aware that NOAA will not be monitoring the production on a continuous 24x7 basis until mid to late 2013.

The EUMETCast details

Installation Instructions

Add the PID 510 (Europe) to the DVB configuration (if not already selected). If a wildcard is used in recv-channels.ini (section starting with [*]), no further change is required. If a dedicated target directory is used in the recv-channels.ini, add a section for the NPP-1 with the same target directory, e.g. add the following lines:
[NPP-1]
target_directory=<add the target directory name here>
tmp_directory=<add the temporary directory name here>

Please note that for Linux OS's, users should also update the/etc/eumetcast-channels.cfg file and change the line as below (or replace the original file with the one downloaded from the link below):
The latest file may be viewed or downloaded from our [Internal link]EUMETCast Channels & PIDs page
.
Stop dvb-eumetcast, e.g.
# /etc/init.d/dvb-eumetcast stop
Edit the /etc/eumetcast-channels.cfg file (or replace the original file with the one downloaded above) and add the line:
"NPP-1                   , 510,    ,     , 224.223.222.254"  \
(re)start dvb-eumetcast e.g.
# /etc/init.d/dvb-eumetcast start

GTS details

The ATMS Sensor Data Records and CrIS Sensor Data Records are also available on GTS. However, the [External link]CrIS data is only available on reduced spectral channels.

The abbreviated bulletin headers are:

  • ATMS SDRs "INSX[01-10] EUMP YYGGgg"
  • CrIS SDRs "INCX[01-70] EUMP YYGGgg"
