Monitoring weather and climate from space

EARS-IASI

The EARS-IASI collects IASI instrument data from Metop satellite-passes via a network of HRPT stations and retransmits Level 1c products via EUMETCast and the GTS.

The primary objective of the [Internal link]Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) instrument measurements is to provide an atmospheric emission spectra to derive temperature and humidity profiles with high vertical resolution and accuracy. Additionally, it is used for the determination of trace gases such as ozone, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and methane, as well as land- and sea surface temperature and emissivity and cloud properties.

IASI Station Details

The planned subset of AHRPT stations supporting the EARS-IASI and the resulting geographical coverage are given in Figure 1.

Pilot Phase and Service Trials

The pilot IASI Retransmission Service is a new EARS service. The purpose of the pilot phase is to enable the EUMETSAT Member States to assess the value of the proposed service, in particular for NWP applications.

During the pilot phase the detailed requirements for a potential future operational IASI Retransmission Service will be established in co-operation with Users based on the experience from the pilot phase.
