Monitoring weather and climate from space

Meteosat Third Generation

Meteosat Third Generation

EUMETSAT is preparing for the next European operational geostationary meteorological satellite system in the form of the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG). MTG will revolutionise weather forecasting and environmental monitoring as we now know them, by providing significant improvement over the capabilities of the current Meteosat generation.

Meteosat Third Generation
Mission Overview
The Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellite programme is expected to bring a step change in capability for operational meteorology. The programme should guarantee access to space-acquired meteorological data until, at least, the late 2030s.
Instruments
MTG system will consist of two parallel in orbit positioned satellites, the MTG-I imaging and MTG-S infrared and ultraviolet sounder.
Services
With Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) the user community can look forward to continued visible and infrared imagery observation from geostationary orbit, and — for the first time — observations from infrared and ultraviolet/near infrared sounding instruments.
Resources
A collection of technical and scientific documentation relating to Meteosat Third Generation (MTG).
