Under the motto “Decoding the blue dot”, EUMETSAT will host a TEDx event tonight, organised by the local RheinMain TEDx group.

A panel of high-calibre speakers will share ideas on how to use ocean observations from EUMETSAT’s own missions and the Copernicus satellites the organisation operates on behalf of the European Commission, to illustrate the importance of data analytics, reduce the negative impact on climate and secure our future .

Hayley Evers-King, a marine scientist with Plymouth Marine Laboratory will discuss the history and importance of ocean colour observations delivered by the Copernicus Sentinel 3A satellite;

Pierre-Yves Cousteau gives his keynote speech at 'Decoding the Blue Dot'

Kwame Adu-Agyekum, a marine researcher with the University of Ghana will talk about how Earth observation data help monitoring fishing grounds in West Africa;

Remko Scharroo, a remote sensing scientist with EUMETSAT will explain how we can observe sea level changes of 3 mm per year from the satellite’s height of 1300 km;

Pierre-Yves Cousteau of Cousteau Divers will discuss the critical importance of global oceans, major threats they are facing and how to empower citizens to make a positive impact;

Over 200 people are expected to attend the event.

TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) is a non-profit organisation devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of an event with speakers making short, inspiring talks (18 minutes or less). At the local level, independent TEDX groups have formed to help share ideas through TEDx events.
