Monitoring fire hazards and their potential threat on population and ecosystems in the high latitude is very important. The dramatic fires in Siberia, due to drought and very high temperature, are one of the multiple examples.
To enhance the capability of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 SLSTR Near Real Time (NRT) Fire Radiative Power (FRP) product, released by EUMETSAT and based on the processor v2.0, the screening of twilight residuals by night has been lately improved for both FRP MWIR and SWIR variables. This is done by a finer adjustment of a Solar angle threshold through the update of the Auxiliary Data Files (no other changes on the product format or processor code).
As a result, the quality of the fire monitoring in the high northern latitude by night, such as over Siberia, or Canada, by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 SLSTR NRT FRP product is enhanced, with much reduced ambiguity with respect to potential twilight residual. Figure 1 is an example of the SLSTR NRT FRP MWIR over Siberia from 23 June 2020.
This change is associated with the NRT FRP IPF Processor v2.0, Baseline Collection 1, Processing Baseline (PB) 2.69-MARINE.
