In order to test the capability of MSG to monitor dust storms during the night, the case of 14 July 2003 (dust storm over Algeria) was studied in more detail. Due to the low emissivity of desert surfaces in the IR8.7 channel, dust clouds are clearly distinct from cloud-free desert surfaces in the IR8.7–IR10.8 brightness temperature difference images.
