The primary objective of the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) instrument measurements is to provide atmospheric emission spectra to derive temperature and humidity profiles with high vertical resolution and accuracy.

Additionally, it is used for the determination of trace gases such as ozone, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and methane, as well as land- and sea surface temperature and emissivity and cloud properties.

EARS-IASI Level 2 operational pilot specification

The EARS-IASI Level 2 pilot adds to the existing EARS-IASI service and the products are currently generated where possible for the same stations and the same overpasses as the EARS-IASI Level 1 service.

Geographical coverage

Same as Level 1

Satellites supported

Metop-B and Metop-C, as shown on the tables on the Regional Data Service/EARS webpage.

Product processing

Inputs: EARS-IASI L1 products and corresponding EARS-ATOVS AMSU-A and MHS products.

Level 2 processing using the same statistical retrieval function PWLR3 (Piece Wise Linear Regression -cube) as for the IASI L2 global products processor, developed by EUMETSAT.

Product segmentation

One file per station per pass.

Products via EUMETCast Europe

Water vapour and temperature profiles as well as land surface temperature, sea surface temperature, land surface emissivity and surface pressure at individual IASI FoV resolution, together with corresponding quality indicators; in HDF-5 format.
