Test data are essential for helping users to carry out system testing and for the development of processing software.

In order for users to prepare for EPS-SG, format familiarisation test data packages have been prepared and are ready for release. A Product Format Specification document describing the content of each product is also released with each test data package.

The V1 test data for a number of observation missions are now available.


Satellite A — Microwave Sounder (MWS)

The MWS (Microwave Sounder) has a direct heritage from the microwave instruments AMSU-A (Advanced Micro-wave Sounding Unit A) and MHS (Micro-wave Humidity Sounder) on board EPS and NOAA satellites. Its primary objective is to support Numerical Weather Prediction at regional and global scales by providing information on atmospheric temperature and water vapour profiles in clear and cloudy conditions.

The Level 1B test data (EPS-SG_MWS-1B-RAD.nc.gz) contain the most important variables related to geolocation and calibration processing. These are listed according to the specifications given in the EPS-SG MWS Level 1B Product Format Specification document, made available along with the test data. The MWS L1B product, in netCDF format, is generated using the MWS L1B In-house Prototype Processor (IPP) developed at EUMETSAT.

The Level 2 test data (EPS-SG_MWS-02-TPW.nc.gz) are generated with the MWS L2 In-house Prototype Processor (IPP) using L1B data as input. The L2 data, in netCDF format, contain the geolocated total precipitable water (TPW) over water-surfaces, and limb-corrected brightness temperatures for all 24 MWS channels. The format and further content are described in the EPS-SG MWS Level 2 Product Format Specification document, made available along with the test data.

These test data are intended for format familiarisation and system testing.

Satellite A — Radio Occulation (RO)

The Radio Occultation (RO) instrument has a direct heritage from GRAS flying on Metop. Its main objective is to support Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and climate monitoring, by providing measurements of bending angle profiles in the troposphere and the stratosphere with a high vertical resolution and accuracy.

In this test dataset, two full orbits are contained in 194 files in netcdf format. The information on all the variables in the output files is available in the EPS-SG RO Level 1B Product Format Specification document, made available along with the test data.

The RO L1B product is generated using the EUMETSAT in-house prototype.

Satellite A — IASI-NG

IASI-NG (Infrared Atmospheric Sounder Interferometer — New Generation) has a direct heritage from the IASI instrument on board EUMETSAT Polar System (EPS) satellites. IASI-NG will ensure continuity to EPS Infrared Atmospheric Sounder mission, with improved spectral and radiometric performances.

Test data description - Level 1C

The EPS-SG IASI-NG L1C test data, in netCDF format, are available via our ftp site:

They were generated by reformatting the simulated IASI-NG TOA radiance dataset according to EPS-SG Generic Product Format Specification (GPFS) and EPS-SG IASI-NG Level 1C Product Format Specification (PFS).

Acknowledgement

The IASI-NG L1C test data are generated in the frame of a cooperation between EUMETSAT and CNES in the context of IASI-NG observation mission.

Test data description - Level 1D

The test data are available here:

The L1D test data set is generated by the IASI-NG L1D IPP (In-house Prototype Processor) using simulated L1C test data and auxiliary data as input. The auxiliary data contains the IASI-NG eigenvectors and the static parameters to configure the Principal Component Compression, the format of which is according to the EPS-SG — IASI-NG Level 1D Auxiliary Data Specification document available with this release.

The L1D test data contain in netCDF format the same information as the L1C data, but the radiances are compressed using Principal Component scores. The data format is explained in the document EPS-SG IASI-NG L1D Product Format Specification (version 3E), available along with the test data. Format specifications common to all EPS-SG products are now available in the EPS-SG Generic Product Format Specification document.

The data covers three full orbits and two partial orbits.

Test data description - Level 2

The EPS-SG IASI-NG L2 test data, in netCDF format, are available via our ftp site:

They were generated by the prototype processor IASI-NG-L2-IPP using IASI-NG L1D and L1C products, and MWS L1B product as input. This test data distribution includes the data in netCDF format and the Product Format Specification document (PFS V3D). The PFS gives an overview of all the L2 products, detailed format description including meta data description and the size of the data per orbit.

All EPS-SG product types generated by the EPS-SG Ground Segment are netCDF-4 files complying with the generic structure and data model set out in the (GPFS V3D), which is also made available with this release.

These data are intended for format familiarisation and system testing.

The IASI-NG L1D test data set is generated using the IASI-NG L1D IPP (In-house Prototype processor) using L1C test data and auxiliary data as input. The auxiliary data (IAS-1D-AUX_EIGV and IAS_1D_AUX_PCCC) contain the IASI-NG eigenvectors and the static parameters to configure the Principal Component Compression.

The L1D test data contain in netCDF format the same information as the L1C data, but the radiances are compressed by using Principal Components. The data format is explained in the Product Format Specification document, made available along with the test data.

These test data are intended for format familiarisation and system testing.

Satellite A — VII (METimage)

The EPS-SG Visible Infrared Imager (METimage) will provide continuity to the AVHRR series on board the Metop and NOAA satellites, and VIIRS on board NOAA satellites.

The METimage L1B test data, in netCDF format, covers a quarter of an orbit of data and is generated using the L1B Ground Processor Prototype (GPP) V1.2.1. The content and format of these products are in line with the specifications in the VII L1B Product Format Specification document, made available along with the test data.

The test data consist of 6 granules. Each granule has a duration of 5 min, 3144 pixels across track and 4200 pixels along track.

These test data are intended for format familiarisation and system testing.

Satellite A — 3MI

The EPS-SG Multi-Viewing Multi-Channel Multi-Polarisation Imaging (3MI) instrument is a passive optical radiometer dedicated primarily to aerosol characterisation for applications in climate monitoring, atmospheric chemistry, and Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP).

Test data description - Level 1B

The 3MI Level 1B test data are available here:

The L1B test data are generated from L1B1 data using the L1B Ground Processor Prototype V2.2 (GPP V2.2) which has been developed within a cooperation between EUMETSAT and CNES. The data up to L1B1 data were generated using the v2.1.3 IDS/GPP from ESA.

The L1B top of atmosphere (TOA) spectral radiance in reflectance factor unit is available to users in netCDF format. The test data are accompanied by a Product Format Specification document (PFS), which explains the numbering of the channels and the acquisition order as well as the product content.

These test data are intended for format familiarisation and system testing.

Satellite B — Scatterometer (SCA)

The EPS-SG SCA has heritage from the ASCAT instrument onboard the EPS satellites.

The SCA L1B test data are generated using the SCA-GPP (SCA Ground Processor Prototype) v1.1. The data, in netCDF format, cover a full orbit.

Satellite B — Microwave Imager (MWI) and Ice Cloud Imager (ICI)

The EPS-SG MWI is a conically scanning radiometer, capable of measuring thermal radiance emitted by the Earth, in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum, providing cloud and precipitation products and all weather surface imagery.

The EPS-SG ICI is a conically scanning millimetre/sub-millimetre wave radiometer providing information on ice clouds.
