Test data are essential for helping users to carry out system testing and for the development of processing software.

In order for users to prepare for EPS-SG, format familiarisation test data packages have been prepared and are ready for release. A product format specification document describing the content of each product is also released with each test data package.

The V1 test data for a number of observation missions are now available.


Satellite A — Microwave Sounder (MWS)

The MWS (Microwave Sounder) has a direct heritage from the microwave instruments AMSU-A (Advanced Micro-wave Sounding Unit A) and MHS (Micro-wave Humidity Sounder) on board EPS and NOAA satellites. Its primary objective is to support numerical weather prediction (NWP) at regional and global scales by providing information on atmospheric temperature and water vapour profiles in clear and cloudy conditions.

Test data description

The Level 1B test data  contain the most important variables related to geolocation and calibration processing. These are listed according to the specifications given in the EPS-SG MWS Level 1B product format specification document, made available along with the test data. The MWS L1B product, in netCDF format, is generated using the MWS L1B in-house prototype processor (IPP) developed at EUMETSAT.

The Level 2 test data  are generated with the MWS L2 IPP using L1B data as input. The L2 data, in netCDF format, contain the geolocated total precipitable water (TPW) over water-surfaces, and limb-corrected brightness temperatures for all 24 MWS channels. The format and further content are described in the EPS-SG MWS Level 2 product format specification document, made available along with the test data.

These test data are intended for format familiarisation and system testing.

Satellite A — Radio Occulation (RO)

The Radio Occultation (RO) instrument has a direct heritage from GRAS flying on Metop. Its main objective is to support NWP and climate monitoring, by providing measurements of bending angle profiles in the troposphere and the stratosphere with a high vertical resolution and accuracy.

The RO level 1b product files are generated by using the EUMETSAT Radio Occultation reference processor. Each Level 1B product file refers to an individual occultation and contains the associated bending angle profiles and the low level data needed to produce them. Such low level data (level 1a) includes, among the other variables, dual frequency signal phases, excess-phases, SNRs and pseudoranges time series, as well as LEO and GNSS orbits arcs and clock biases.

Satellite A — IASI-NG

IASI-NG (Infrared Atmospheric Sounder Interferometer — New Generation) has a direct heritage from the IASI instrument on board EUMETSAT Polar System (EPS) satellites. IASI-NG will ensure continuity to EPS Infrared Atmospheric Sounder mission, with improved spectral and radiometric performances.

Test data description - Level 1D

The L1D test data set is generated by the IASI-NG L1D In-House Prototype Processor using 1C test data and auxiliary data as input. The L1C data provides the geolocated real spectrum and the auxiliary data contains the IASI-NG eigenvectors and the static parameters to configure the Principal Component Compression.

The L1D data follows the format specifications provided in the documents lsuied below, which are available together with this release package.

These test data are intended for format familiarisation and system testing.

The IASI-NG L1D test data set is generated using the IASI-NG L1D In-house Prototype Processor using IASI-NG L1C test data and auxiliary data as input. The input L1C test data provides the geolocated real spectrum and other information required for generating the L1D data.

Both IASI-NG L1C and L1D test data are in netCDF format and they are described in the following documents available with the package:

The test data link above also includes the auxiliary data which contains full resolution, original L1C radiances of any outlier spectra. The auxiliary data also contains the mean and standard deviation of the compression residuals computed over all non-outlier spectra of the output product.

Test data description - Level 2

The IASI-NG L2 test data V2 is generated using the IASI-NG L2 In-house Prototype Processor (IPP) (L2PGS) with input data coming from IASI-NG L1C and L1D test data, MWS L1B test data and auxiliary data as input.

All EPS-SG product types generated by the EPS-SG ground segment are netCDF-4 files complying with the generic structure and data model set out in the (GPFS V3D).

These data are intended for format familiarisation and system testing.

The IASI-NG L2 test data V2.1 is generated using the IASI-NG L2 In-house Prototype Processor using L1D test data, L1C test data, MWS L1B test data and auxiliary data as input.

Satellite A — VII (METimage)

The EPS-SG Visible Infrared Imager (METimage) will provide continuity to the AVHRR series on board the Metop and NOAA satellites, and VIIRS on board NOAA satellites.

The METimage L1B spectral radiance product is generated using the latest version of the Ground Processor Prototype and the test data package covers three orbits of data. Two of these orbits are in succession, allowing for the retrieval of atmospheric motion vectors for the overlapping regions at the Poles. The first two orbits cover summer season and the third orbit covers winter season The selected granules cover a variety of basic scenarios including:

  • Clear and cloudy scenes.
  • Land, sea, and coastlines areas.
  • Snow/ice covered areas.
  • North polar areas.
  • Day, twilight and night time illumination conditions.

The METimage L2 test data V2 is generated using the most recent version of the in-house Multi Satellite Prototype Processor (MSPS) and the METimage L1B test data V2 as input.

The L2 test data package consists of the following group of products:

  • VII-L2-CLD -VII L2 cloud detection/probability.
  • VII-02-WVV - VII L2 Total Precipitable Water product (from visible/near-IR observations).
  • VII-02-WVI - VII L2 Total Precipitable Water product (from IR observations).
  • VII-02-CTP - VII L2 cloud top pressure, height and optical thickness from VII observations in the O2 A-band.
  • VII-02-OCA - VII L2 cloud optical and microphysical properties, cloud Liquid/Ice Water Path (LWP, IWP) and Volcanic Ash (VA) product.
  • VII-02-AMV - VII L2 Atmospheric Motion Vectors product.

The EPS-SG Multi-Viewing Multi-Channel Multi-Polarisation Imaging (3MI) instrument is a passive optical radiometer dedicated primarily to aerosol characterisation for applications in climate monitoring, atmospheric chemistry, and NWP.

Satellite B — Microwave Imager (MWI) and Ice Cloud Imager (ICI)

The EPS-SG MWI is a conically scanning radiometer, capable of measuring thermal radiance emitted by the Earth, in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum, providing cloud and precipitation products and all weather surface imagery.

The EPS-SG ICI is a conically scanning millimetre/sub-millimetre wave radiometer providing information on ice clouds.
