A faint plume of smoke can be seen south west of Gomera (third island from the West) — the result of a large fire.

The fire started on 4 August, but began spreading later in the month, after being fanned by winds. The extreme weather conditions with hot, dry and strong winds combined with a year of almost no rain combined to exacerbate the situation. About 8% of the whole island was seriously affected and 18% of the national park was damaged or destroyed. Over 100 houses were partially or totally burnt down and 5,000 people were evacuated.
