The seasonal heavy rains over the area of the rivers Amur, Nen and Songhua in eastern Russia and north-eastern China produced particularly severe flooding this year.

Comparing Metop-B images before and after the rains shows the extent of the flooding.

On the 'before' image taken on 22 June, the dry land is clearly seen as brown areas and there is little water. In the image taken on 20 August the overflowing rivers and flooded areas can be easily seen.
