The LI MAG meeting #14 was devoted to:
- Communicating to the LI MAG members the status of the MTG programme and of the MTG LI system procurement.
- Reporting on the status of the development of tools for monitoring LI Level 0 and Level 1b data. In addition, present to the forum an example of in-depth analysis of Level 1b products.
- Discussing science activities related to LI performances and data assimilation/use.
- Moving forward on the coordination between EUMETSAT and LI MAG in preparation of the LI Commissioning.
Objectives and outcomes
1. Communicating to the LI MAG members the status of the MTG programme and of the MTG LI system procurement
The objective was accomplished by having key people from ESA and EUMETSAT presenting the status of the MTG programme, ground segment procurement, LI instrument procurement, and LI commissioning.
2. Reporting on the status of the development of tools for monitoring LI Level 0 and Level 1b data. In addition, present to the forum an example of in-depth analysis of Level 1b products
The objective was accomplished by having the LI Science Team reporting on the status of two of the key Off-Line Tools for the LI Commissioning: the LI Statistical and Reporting Tool (LI-STAR) and the LI Processing Visualization Tool (LI-PVT). In addition, the LI Science Team presented the analysis of a six-hour-long LI Level 1b dataset produced with the Image Quality Tool processing facility. In detail: i) interpretation of data rate variability over six hours through time sequences and visual inspection of LI measurements, ii) detection performance measurements at Level 0 and Level 1b in overlap regions between LI optical channels.
3. Discussing science activities related to LI performances and data assimilation/use.
The objective was accomplished by having several international experts focusing on the following topics: i) comparison between GLM Level 0/Level 2 data and data from external lightning location systems, ii) assimilation of LI data into the AROME system and use of LI data for Nowcasting applications, iii) a-posteriori analysis of single-group flash filtering in the GLM processing chain and relationship between GLM detection threshold and expected detection performances.
4. Progress on the coordination between EUMETSAT and LI MAG members for the work to be done during the LI commissioning
The objective was accomplished by reviewing a confluence page that will be accessible by LI MAG members and will be used as a 'portal' for exchanging software, data and information between experts participating to the LI Commissioning.
