The LI MAG meeting #12 was devoted to:
- Communicating to the LI MAG members the status of the MTG programme and of the MTG LI system procurement.
- Presenting to the LI MAG the status of the implementation of the LI-STAR Off-Line Tool with focus on: i) the computation of the False Alarm Rate (FAR) and ii) the derivation of maps to inform users about LI expected performances.
- Learning from both internal and external experts about different activities that could support the LI commissioning and cal/val.
- Discussing about the use of lightning detection data for forecast, science and user preparation.
Objectives and outcomes
1. Provide the LI MAG experts with an overview of the MTG program status with focus on the LI
The objective was accomplished by having key people from ESA and EUMETSAT presenting the status of the MTG programme, ground segment procurement, and LI instrument procurement.
2. Presenting to the LI MAG the status of the implementation of the LI-STAR Off-Line Tool with focus on: i) the computation of the False Alarm Rate (FAR) and ii) the derivation of maps to inform users about LI expected performances.
The objective was achieved by: i) having an extensive presentation on the development status and capabilities of the LI-STAR Offline tool and ii) proposing to the LI MAG the EUMETSAT plan for communicating the LI expected performances to future users. The presentations were followed by a discussion involving LI MAG members and external experts. Important feedback have been taken by EUMETSAT on how to communicate performances to users. EUMETSAT will refine the communication strategy.
3. Learning from both internal and external experts about different activities that could support the LI commissioning and cal/val.
The objective was accomplished by having a round of contributions from LI MAG members and external participants about different types of studies and analyses. These showcase the wide range of possibilities to perform the LI cal/val. To be highlighted: i) the focus on cal/val activities over African territories and ii) the first examples of validation approach for LI accumulated products.
4. Discussing about the use of lightning detection data for forecast, science and user preparation.
The objective was achieved by having a round of contributions touching the different topics. To be highlighted: i) the presentation on the use of GLM data by European experts, ii) the kick-off of the review process of the LI Level 2 Product User Guide (publicly available soon), and iii) the discussion on the use of LI data to support climate studies.
