Discontinuation of the Meteosat 0° Multi-Sensor Precipitation Estimate (MPE) product
The Meteosat 0° MPE product will be discontinued on 10 July 2019 and is being replaced with the P-IN-SEVIRI (PR-OBS-3B) product from the H SAF.

28 February 2019
The MPE product is currently generated operationally for all three Meteosat missions: the prime Full Earth Scan (FES) mission at 0°, the Rapid Scan (RSS) mission at 9.5° East, and the Indian Ocean Data Coverage (IODC) mission at 41.5° East.
The generation of the MPE product is based on rain rate data derived from the SSMIS instrument onboard the DMSP F-17 and F-18 satellites. Without the SSMIS input data, the MPE product cannot be generated. As F-17 and F-18 are now operating far beyond their planned lifetime, it has been decided to discontinue the Meteosat 0° MPE product and to replace it with the P-IN-SEVIRI (PR-OBS-3B) product from the H SAF.
The product H03B P-IN-SEVIRI (PR-OBS-3B) is based on the same scientific principles as the MPE product. It represents precipitation rates derived from instantaneous precipitation maps generated by IR images. It covers the Meteosat 0° mission’s full Earth disc. The H SAF has no plan to develop an RSS version of the P-IN-SEVIRI (PR-OBS-3B) product; it however plans to generate this product for IODC in the near future. The generation at EUMETSAT of the MPE product for the RSS and IODC missions will, therefore, continue as long as the SSMIS data are available.
As the Meteosat 0° MPE product will be discontinued on 10 July 2019, users are encouraged to start using the P-IN-SEVIRI (PR-OBS-3B) product instead.
