New NOAA-NCEP forecast products for Africa will be distributed on EUMETCast from 21 February 2019.

New and higher resolution models

The new suite of NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) forecast products are derived from the high resolution GFS (Global Forecast System) and GDAS (Global Data Assimilation System) model forecast output data. Initially, the products were developed for Africa, later they evolved to include other international domains. This necessitated consolidating some of the older products, while accommodating the products from the newer models.

With this evolution, emphasis was given to the short-term weather forecasts involving the NCEP GFS, GDAS and GEFS (Global Ensemble Forecast System) model outputs.

The new products are generated as part of the NCEP operational suite, and are more reliable and timely, compared to the old products which stopped being distributed in July 2018.

Discarded products

WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model forecast products for North Africa and southern Africa could not be continued due to hardware/software resource constraints. While WRF was running at 21km resolution, the latest GFS is running at 12km resolution, with the forecast output at 25km resolution. This makes GFS a better choice, thus making WRF at 21km obsolete.

Other discarded products include the satellite rainfall estimates, weekly summaries, the seasonal forecast, and monitoring products.

Format and file naming of the new products remain unchanged:
Format: tar compression
Filename convention: ncep_forecast_<YYYYMMDD>_<product-group>.tar

Users already subscribed to NCEP products on EUMETCast will receive the new products automatically. Other users wishing to receive these products should register via our Earth Observation Portal (EOP).
