NOAA has announced that from 1 August 2022, GOES-18 ABI data will be at ‘Provisional’ level of maturity (for reference: NOAA’s official definition of ‘provisional’ ).

NOAA has made these data available early to cover the warm periods (1 August to 8 September and 13 October to 16 November 2022) when the quality of GOES-17 data is known to be degraded.

In preparation for this, we plan to start disseminating GOES-18 ABI L1b data in 2km resolution, every 10 minutes, on 28 July 2022. (Note: The data will not be at provisional maturity until 1 August 2022, as mentioned above).

They will be disseminated in parallel to the operational GOES-17 ABI L1b data until 4 January 2023, when NOAA plans to swap from GOES-17 to GOES-18 for the operational GOES-West service. During the parallel dissemination phase, outside the warm periods, users should continue using the operational GOES-17 data and there may be interruptions to the GOES-18 ABI data stream and changes to GOES-18 ABI scan modes, without any notice.

The GOES-18 ABI L1b data will be distributed on EUMETCast as follows:

EUMETCast Europe

Channel: E1H-TPG-4
Multicast address:
PID: 600

EUMETCast Terrestrial

Channel: T01-TPG-4
