Following the project scientists' recommendation during the last Ocean Surface Topography Science team meeting, on 24 March the Ocean Surface Topography Virtual Constellation of the Committee for Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS OST-VC) declared Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich as the new Reference Altimetry Mission for the worldwide altimetry constellation.
Jason-3 will stop its measurements on 7 April 13:36 UTC, with the objective to restart its measurements on interleaved orbit after 25 April. Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich will then remain alone on the reference position, ensuring the reference, including for L3 products.
After a thorough validation process, the Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich project team can announce that, starting on 6 April, Sentinel-6 L2P and L3 NRT and STC products will be publicly released, with the L3 products being based on the Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich reference. Note: NTC products will be released at a later stage.
The Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich L2P/L3 products are generated by CNES, as part of the Jason-CS/Sentinel-6 Cooperation Agreement between CNES and EUMETSAT.
Two distinct products are generated:
- Significant Wave Height and Wind Speed
- Sea Level Anomalies (SLA)
Product handbooks provided by CNES:
Handbook for Wave/Wind products
Handbook for the Sea Level Anomaly products
The table below lists these products, with links to our Product Navigator where more information on the products can be found (including example filenames). The table also indicates the distribution means for each product.
(*) Note: The products will be available on the second EUMETCast Terrestrial service (TER-2). In order to receive them, users need to have installed the latest tellicast-client version (V2.14.7) for Windows or Linux. Users also need to enable and start the ter-2 instance on their reception station. More information on this is available in the manuals and README (Tellicast) files.
A sub-set of three products will be distributed on EUMETCast Europe (as indicated in the table above). The start of the distribution on EUMETCast Europe is planned for 20 April 2022, and will therefore not take place on 6 April as is the case for the other distribution means.
Users wishing to access the Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich products listed in the table should register via our Earth Observation Portal (EOP).
For SFTP access, upon registration for this service via the EOP, access link and credentials will be provided via email.
