Many people in Western Europe woke on 31 March to find a thin covering of dust on vehicles and other surfaces.

The dust was transported thousands of miles from North Africa, where a large sandstorm developed on 29 March (seen as intense pink on the image). Winds from the south-east carried the sand, which then fell when it later rained over parts of the UK, France and Italy.
