EUMETSAT is a partner in the Virtual Laboratory for Training and Education in Satellite Meteorology (VLab) the global network of specialised training centres and meteorological satellite operators works together to improve the utilisation of data and products from meteorological and environmental satellites, which is supported by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS). You can keep up-to-date with all VLab activities via VLab news.
We work closely with the training centres, Centres of Excellence in Oman, Casablanca, Niger, Kenya and South Africa. In supporting these Centres of Excellence, EUMETSAT works with the centres to make sure they have access to data, and helps them to develop expertise in the use of current and future satellite data. We have a long history supporting training and development outside Europe — the first course in Africa was organised more than a decade ago.
The four African training centres host African Satellite Meteorology Training (ASMET) supported by EUMETSAT. On their site you will find information on the courses and resources available in both French and English for forecasters across Africa, including the annual forecasting courses. The ASMET collaboration has been operating for over 20 years and has reached forecasters from every country in the continent.
In Europe, we support the EUMeTrain which is also a contribution to the VLab activities. There are online training events, open to everyone, which cover a theme in satellite meteorology. These online events make the training more accessible across the region, compared to a classroom course.
