Working at EUMETSAT

EUMETSAT is a multinational organisation, with headquarters located in Darmstadt, Germany, 30 km from Frankfurt am Main.

EUMETSAT employees are business professionals who represent a diverse field of expertise, ranging from satellite operations, engineering, meteorology and data processing, to administration, law and finance.

The services of staff are complemented where necessary by consultants, and a departmental and divisional management structure is used to establish clear goals and targets, against which performance, individual training needs and personal development are assessed annually.

Staff members are drawn from each of the member states, and it makes for a cosmopolitan working environment. “EUMETSAT is very different from my previous company. There are many nationalities here and I like learning about the way people think and do things. It’s interesting and I enjoy it!” Judit Papp, Budget Officer.

English and French are EUMETSAT’s official languages. The diversity of the nationalities of our staff is shown in this graph:

LOCATION

In keeping with its global outlook, EUMETSAT provides a world-class working environment in its modern headquarters with bright open spaces and a subsidised canteen.

Located in the region of Hessen in West-Central Germany, Darmstadt is a city of approximately 140,000 inhabitants. It is home to many major scientific and technical organisations, including EUMETSAT, European Space Agency Operations Centre (ESOC), T-Mobile, Merck, and more. Their development has led to Darmstadt being dubbed the ‘Wissenschaftstadt’, or ‘City of Science’, and makes it an economically prosperous and internationally diverse city.

"EUMETSAT is very different from my previous company. There are many nationalities here and I like learning about the way people think and do things."

As a result of its close proximity to Frankfurt, a major European transport hub, Darmstadt is easily accessible by air, rail and road. It is a 30 minute drive from Frankfurt International Airport, and its main railway station has links to major cities both within Germany and in neighbouring countries.

“Coming from Paris, I was a little uneasy moving to the province, but after a period of acclimatisation, I discovered the enjoyment of living in Darmstadt as it offers a lot of green spaces and opportunities for sport and outdoor activities (climbing wall and park, cycling, etc.) as well as entertainment (Schloßgrabenfest) and culture (theatre, opera, concerts). With its bilingual school, Lichtenbergschule, Darmstadt is a good place to live for my family”. Christelle Patterson, Project Controller.

Darmstadt is also located close to a number of other cities, such as Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Mannheim, Mainz and Wiesbaden, as well as the Hessischer Bergstrasse, a string of smaller, wine-making towns stretching southwards from Darmstadt towards Heidelberg.

“The experience of "living in Frankfurt with a family" is very rich, since it's a multicultural city with lots of activities for the whole family, coming from a mix of nationalities. Frankfurt is a nice compromise between urban and rural life, close to all facilities and at the same time to nature which is appreciable with children”. Dorothee Coppens, Remote Sensing Expert.

Relocation

Moving and settling to another country can be a challenging task, especially when combined with starting a new job.

EUMETSAT provides, via an external company, support to staff members and their families moving into the Darmstadt area; for example, in finding accommodation, opening a bank account, and registering residence in Germany.

“One of my worries prior to moving to Darmstadt was about the paper work and administrative procedures especially as I do not speak German. In this regard, the support from the relocation company was highly appreciated. You not only have someone to interface with the German authorities, but also an efficient partner for fixing appointments (e.g. with the bank or utilities) as well as a friendly adviser when it comes to choosing an apartment. In just three words: nice helpful partners.Antonio Lobo, Copernicus System & Interfaces Engineer.
