NOAA is planning to transition the operations mode of its GOES-East and GOES-West satellites to Mode 6 (Full Disk scan every 10 minutes) on 2 April.
Wednesday, 27 March 2019

The Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on GOES-East (GOES-16) and GOES-West (GOES-17) currently operates in Mode 3 which corresponds to Full Disk scan every 15 minutes. NOAA is planning to transition to 10-minute scanning Mode 6 operations on 2 April.
Implications for users:
For GOES-East (GOES-16): As soon as the transition to Mode 6 is effective, EUMETSAT will start distributing GOES-East ABI Level 1 data every 10 minutes, instead of the current 15-minute frequency. As operations modes are reflected in the filenames, these will change as follows: they will start with ‘OR_ABI-L1b-RadF-M6C02_G16_’ instead of ‘OR_ABI-L1b-RadF-M3C02_G16_’.
For GOES-West (GOES-17): The transition to Mode 6 will not affect the current dissemination frequency of the ABI Level 1 data, i.e. the data will continue to be disseminated every 30 minutes. However filenames will change: they will start with ‘OR_ABI-L1b-RadF-M6C02_G17_’ instead of ‘OR_ABI-L1b-RadF-M3C02_G17_’
