GOES-17 ABI Mode 3 Cooling Timeline Implementation

Upcoming GOES-17 ABI Mode 3 operations will affect ABI data distribution on EUMETCast.

Thursday, 19 March 2020

NOAA has commenced permanent operational implementation of the Mode 3 Cooling Timeline. As a result, NOAA will operate the GOES-17 ABI instrument in Mode 3 (instead of Mode 6) over four periods each year. This is in order to mitigate the number of saturated images resulting from the loop heat pipe (LHP) temperature regulation anomaly (further information on https://www.goes-r.gov/users/GOES-17-ABI-Performance.html)

For 2020, the first period of Mode 3 operations was from 26 February to 1 March. The next planned periods announced by NOAA are:

  • 9 April–1 May
  • 12 August–1 September
  • 14 October–31 October

Dates for 2021 are yet to be determined by NOAA and will be announced by them in due course.

During these periods, every day between 06:00 and 12:00 UTC, GOES-17 operations mode will change from Mode 6 to Mode 3.

For the upcoming period (9 April–1 May), this will affect the distribution of ABI Level 1B data as follows:

  • Full disk scans will be available per 30-minute cycle with following timestamps in the filename: 0600, 0630, 0700, 0730, 0800, 0830, 0900, 0930, 1000, 1030, 1100, 1130 UTC with Mode 6 resuming at 12:00 UTC. Noting that GOES-17 ABI Level 1B data at a 10-min frequency will start being distributed on EUMETCast from 1 April 2020 (see news story GOES-West ABI Level-1B 10-minute data on EUMETCast soon), this means that data at HH10, HH20, HH40, HH50 will be missing during these 6-hour periods, until 01/05/2020 12:00 UTC.
  • The change to Mode 3 also means that there will be a temporary filename change of GOES-17 ABI Level 1B data: filenames will start with ‘OR_ABI-L1b-RadF-M3C02_G17_’ instead of ‘OR_ABI-L1b-RadF-M6C02_G17_’.
