The EARS-CrIS service collects data from the CrIS instrument onboard the SUOMI-NPP spacecraft, operated by NASA and NOAA.

EARS-CrIS Figure 1

The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), provides soundings of the atmosphere with 1305 spectral channels, over three wavelength ranges: LWIR (9.14-15.38 µm), MWIR (5.71-8.26 µm) and SWIR (3.92-4.64 µm). The CrIS instrument, a Fourier transform spectrometer, scans a 2200km swath width (+/- 50 degrees), with 30 Earth-scene views. Each field consists of nine fields of view, arrayed as 3x3 array of 14km diameter spots (nadir spatial resolution).

In the CrIS EARS-service only a selection of 399 channels is disseminated.

The provision of CrIS data in the form of an EARS-service is a logical extension of the EARS-IASI service, providing operational IR sounder data with high timeliness for the assimilation in numerical atmospheric models from regional to global scale.
