The EARS-CrIS service collects data from the CrIS instrument onboard the JPSS spacecrafts, operated by NASA and NOAA.
The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), provides soundings of the atmosphere with 1305 spectral channels, over three wavelength ranges: LWIR (9.14-15.38 µm), MWIR (5.71-8.26 µm) and SWIR (3.92-4.64 µm). The CrIS instrument, a Fourier transform spectrometer, scans a 2200km swath width (+/- 50 degrees), with 30 Earth-scene views. Each field consists of nine fields of view, arrayed as 3x3 array of 14km diameter spots (nadir spatial resolution). Check the JPSS pages on the NASA website for more details
In the CrIS EARS-service only a selection of channels is disseminated (399 for S-NPP and 431 for NOAA-20).
The provision of CrIS data in the form of an EARS-service is a logical extension of the EARS-IASI service, providing operational IR sounder data with high timeliness for the assimilation in numerical atmospheric models from regional to global scale.
