Sentinel-3 SLSTR data being disseminated to Validation Partners

EUMETSAT has now started to disseminate data from the Sentinel-3A Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) to selected expert users.

Tuesday, 14 June 2016

The Level 1B products are made available with global coverage and as datasets over selected geographical regions as required for the validation activities.

Sentinel-3 supports the monitoring of the Marine Environment with products, including ocean colour (OLCI), altimetry (SRAL/MWR) and sea surface temperature (SLSTR). Sentinel-3 marine data will provide operational and synoptic information about the marine physical state and dynamics, about marine ecosystems, water quality and pollution, and sea ice. The information is used for the management of marine resources, coastal and marine environment monitoring, maritime safety, and climate monitoring.

EUMETSAT Remote Sensing Scientist Anne O'Carroll, said: "SLSTR provides crucial data for operational weather and ocean forecasting, including predictions of storms, hurricanes and flooding, and for coastal zones. These data are needed for initialising global and regional weather and ocean forecast models, and wave and current predictions. The design of the SLSTR includes a dual view of the surface, meaning accurate measurements can be obtained allowing for aerosol and water vapour differences in the atmosphere."

Timeliness of S3 Products

Near-Real-Time (NRT): products are made available to the users within 3 hours after satellite sensing.

Non-Time-Critical (NTC): products are made available to the users within 1 month after sensing.

The table below lists the SLSTR global marine products that are currently being generated and delivered to validation partners from the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite. There are also datasets made available which are subset by region.

Sentinel-3 data have been initially released to selected expert users to allow for an initial scientific validation of the mission's products and services. Once these analyses are complete the decision will be taken on whether they are ready to be released to a wider audience.

Data from the OLCI have already been released to validation partners. Data from the Surface Topography instrument are expected to be released to expert users later in June.
