CVIIRS tool for EARS-VIIRS Day/Night-Band (DNB) – Update required

Due to the addition of a leap second on 31/12/2016, an update to the configuration of the CVIIRS tool for EARS-VIIRS DNB is required.

Tuesday, 22 November 2016

Leap seconds are added every few years to keep Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) aligned with solar time. This year, on 31 December, the clocks will strike 23:59:60 before rolling over to 00:00:00 on 1 January 2017.

Because of this, the configuration of the CVIIRS tool used to compress the EARS-VIIRS DNB data before dissemination via EUMETCast, and for expansion on the user side, needs to be updated.

There are 2 ways to do this:

  • Edit the file config/ and add the string “,2016-12-31” at the end of the line called 'LeapDates',
