Current GOES-15 data service to end and new GOES-15 data in netCDF to be available soon

The current GOES-15 data in LRIT format will stop being distributed on EUMETCast on 1 January 2019 and new GOES-15 data in netCDF format will be available from 17 December 2018.

Thursday, 06 December 2018

The current GOES-15 LRIT data service on EUMETCast Europe and EUMETCast Africa will end on 1 January 2019 at 07:00 UTC.

The new GOES-17 satellite is currently planned to be declared the operational NOAA’s GOES-West satellite in January 2019. An exact date has not been communicated by NOAA yet. As NOAA plans to operate GOES-15 (at 128° W) and GOES-17 (at 137.2° W) in tandem until May 2019, EUMETSAT will start distributing new GOES-15 data in netCDF from 17 December 2018 to facilitate user transition.

The data will be distributed on EUMETCast Europe High Volume Service Transponder 1 (HVS-1):

Channel: E1H-TPG-4
PID: 600
Multicast address: 224.223.223.12

The data will be half-hourly Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere data from all GOES-15 channels, with a geolocation file for every slot. Three-hourly Full Disk data will be part of this data stream. The data will be calibrated data with reflectance for channel 1 (values 0-100) and radiance for the other channels.

Example filenames:

goes15.2018.289.120018_1.nc.bz2
goes15.2018.289.120018_geo.nc.bz2

Users subscribed to the current GOES-15 data will be given automatic access to the new half-hourly GOES-15 netCDF data from 17 December 2018.

In the meantime, sample files of the new data are available on our FTP server:
ftp://ftp.eumetsat.int/pub/OPS/out/test-data/Test-data-for-External-Users/GOES-15_netCDF_rad/

Note: the sample data are rectified to 135° W, but the live data will be rectified to 128° W.
