The evolution of the EUMETSAT Web Imagery service is starting

In preparation of significant improvements to our web imagery service, we are making changes to our legacy services.

One of the first changes is the migration of our current Near Real-time imagery service from http://oiswww.eumetsat.org/IPPS/html/MSG/ to https://eumetview.eumetsat.int/static-images/ on 10 April 2019.

An automatic redirect from the old URL to the new URL will be in place until 4 June 2019, but please be aware that automated scripts using wget or curl used to download images are likely to fail because they do not automatically follow advertised HTTP redirect. In order to mitigate a loss of imagery, users are requested to update their bookmarks and scripts with the new URL as soon as the switchover takes place on 10 April.

This change is required due to the equipment obsolescence and a desire to start to consolidate our web imagery services under the umbrella of EUMETView. EUMETView was introduced a few years ago and offers interactive access to more imagery than the old Near Real-time imagery service.

We recommend that users start to use this service, as we are planning further enhancements in 2019 including:

  • The introduction of a new User Interface.
  • Enhanced API (scripted access).
  • Access to licensed imagery.
  • Visualisation of shapes and the analysis of parameters using Web Feature Service (WFS) standards and analysis of pixel values (for a selection of products).
  • Generation of time series using Web Coverage Service (WCS) standards.

These changes, plus the inclusion of more visualisations covering a range of application areas, are part of the exciting changes to come.

The figure illustrates how WCS can be used to get time series information for Sentinel-3 Sea Surface Temperature.
