FY-4A Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS) data to be available soon

FY-4A GIIRS Level 1 data will be available on EUMETCast Terrestrial from 24 April.

GIIRS onboard CMA’s FY-4A satellite is the first hyperspectral infrared sounder operating from geostationary orbit. It uses a Michelson interferometer to measure radiance in the infrared spectral domain. It has a spatial resolution of 16 km at the sub-satellite point.

Current operations mode:

  • Every 2 hours: Full Observation region (3N-55N, 66E-144E), comprised of 7 tasks, each task taking around 12 minutes with a gap until the end of the 15 minute cycle. One task contains 60 dwells, each in a separate file.
  • 16-18 UTC: Maintenance, data unavailable
  • The last 15 minutes of each 2-hour observation is used for geolocation and calibration.

The GIIRS Level 1 data, in native HDF-5 format, will be distributed on EUMETCast Terrestrial:
