EUMETSAT Director-General Alain Ratier met with two Ministers from the Government of Turkey during a visit to Ankara today.

The visit took place at the invitation of the head of EUMETSAT’s Turkey delegation Volkan Mutlu Coşkun, Director-General of the Turkish State Meteorological Service, who accompanied Ratier during his stay.

Ratier met with Minister for Agriculture and Forestry Dr Bekir Pakdemirli and Minister for Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank this morning.

The Director-General spoke with the Ministers about EUMETSAT and its missions, both current and future satellite programmes.

Discussions with Dr Pakdemirli focused on the socio-economic benefits, estimated at €2.6 billion per year, that weather forecasts bring to Turkish citizens and the country’s economy, and the contribution of EUMETSAT data to this.

Turkey has been a Member State of EUMETSAT since 1986.

While in Ankara, Ratier also visited the TUBITAK Space Technologies Research Institute, the WMO Regional Training Centre, and the Turkish State Meteorological Services facilities.
