Met Office East Africa 4 km Model to be retired

As part of the transition to the Met Office 4.4 km resolution Tropical Africa model (TA4), the East Africa 4 km model is being retired. Data and products from this model will no longer be distributed via EUMETCast from 17 September 2019.

The TA4 will cover a much larger area — sub-Saharan Africa as far as 12 degrees south. It will be available to MESA/PUMA users after the next PUMA/Synergie upgrade, which is planned to take place in the first half of 2020 (the exact timing will be communicated in due course). Consequently, there will be a gap in model provision between the retirement of the East Africa model and the availability of the new Tropical Africa model data.

National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) in Africa can view the Tropical Africa model data on the ‘Africa Web Viewer’, provided by the UK Voluntary Cooperation Programme. It is available via the following link: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/premium/vcpafrica/

Each NMHS has been given a username and login, which can be used by all its meteorologists. Please email international@metoffice.gov.uk if you require further information, or contact our User Service Helpdesk.
