Release of Metop AVHRR Atmospheric Motion Vectors Climate Data Records

New Metop AVHRR Atmospheric Motion Vectors Climate Data Records are now available to users.

Thursday, 20 February 2020

Two new datasets are available:

1. Metop-A and -B AVHRR Polar Atmospheric Motion Vectors (AMVs) Climate Data Record

After a first release in November 2019, this is the second release of Metop AVHRR Polar AMVs Climate Data Record

The data record includes products generated using IR images (channel 4) taken from the AVHRR/3 imager onboard Metop-A and Metop-B polar satellites. Polar AMVs are derived using two AVHRR orbits leading to one product every 100 minutes. Each product contains several wind vectors with their associated speed, direction, height, and several quality indicators. The coverage boundaries are polar caps polar wards of 45 degrees. The dataset covers the period from 1 March 2007 until 31 December 2017 for Metop-A, and from 24 April 2013 until 31 December 2017 for Metop-B. It was generated using version 3.1.1 of the EUMETSAT operational algorithm and forecast from ERA-Interim reanalyses as auxiliary input data. The dataset is archived in the EUMETSAT Data Centre and is available in two formats: EUMETSAT EPS native format and BUFR format.

2. AVHRR Global (dual) AMVs Climate Data Record — Metop-A/B and -B/A

This is the first release of the AVHRR Global AMVs Climate Data Record. The data record includes products generated using IR images (channel 4) taken from the AVHRR/3 imager onboard the Metop-A and Metop-B polar satellites. Each product contains several wind vectors with their associated speed, direction, height, and several quality indicators. The coverage is global. The dataset covers the period from 24 April 2013 until December 2017. It was generated using version 3.1.1 of the EUMETSAT operational algorithm and forecast from ERA-Interim reanalyses as auxiliary data. The dataset is archived in the EUMETSAT Data Centre and is available in two formats: EUMETSAT EPS native format and BUFR format.

These two datasets are Thematic Climate Data Records (TCDRs) produced for the Copernicus Climate Change Service.
