Copious precipitation falling into very dry air of north foehn origin, caused unusually widespread snowfall in the lowlands south of the Alps.

The day after the snow cover (light blue) melted very rapidly, and in the afternoon only the snow over slightly elevated terrain along the Po Valley resisted the spring sun.
