Image of the week: Storm Floris
Watching our Earth from space

This week’s image is of Storm Floris passing over the UK on 4 August as seen by the Meteosat-12 weather satellite in geostationary orbit, 36,000km above the Earth.
Storm Floris brought unseasonably strong winds and heavy rain as it moved past northwestern Ireland, across northern UK, especially Scotland, and then on to Denmark and Norway.
Over 10,000 homes and businesses lost power in Ireland as the storm swept past the northwest coast. Scotland was particularly badly hit by the storm as wind speeds of over 100 mph damaged power lines leaving more than 50,000 homes without power and falling trees caused extensive disruption to rail networks.
