The purpose of the EUMETSAT User Forum in Africa is to foster the well-established dialogue between EUMETSAT and the African user community, in particular the National Meteorological Services and their regional centres.

The overall aim is to facilitate the use of EUMETSAT satellite data throughout the continent, and to identify actions and initiatives that could be taken by EUMETSAT to meet the requirements of its African partners.

After postponing the 14th EUMETSAT User Forum in Africa twice due to the pandemic, the Forum will be held online in the form of virtual sessions.

In particular, this Forum will discuss access and use of satellite data for weather and climate services, with a focus on the upcoming Meteosat Third Generation, as well as on the capacity-building programmes funded by the European Union and implemented by the African Union Commission.

With Africa being the most susceptible continent to climate change, it needs to develop strong science-based climate services that help decision makers define and implement appropriate strategies.

For more than 20 years, EUMETSAT has partnered with African policy and decision makers, weather and climate experts, the World Meteorological Organisation and the European Union to make its data more easily available in Africa and to build capacity for their best use.

With EUMETSAT being committed to making its data available to African weather and climate services and to fostering capacity building, discussions during the forum will specifically revolve around the changes and upgrades brought about by the Meteosat Third Generation satellites.

The online Plenary Sessions of the 14th EUMETSAT User Forum in Africa will take place on 6 – 7 October 2021.

To complement the forum, there will also be technical working groups for about 80 African weather forecasters and other users of EUMETSAT meteorological data taking place from 28 to 30 September.
