The Europe-Africa Space Earth Observation High-Level Forum is a hybrid event that takes place in Lisbon and online, on 10 – 11 June 2021. The event is organised in the framework of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, with the support of the European Commission, the African Union Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA) and EUMETSAT.

The theme of the forum is space as an enabler for digital and green transitions, with earth observation fostering sustainable development, new skills and job creation.

The main goal is to promote European-African cooperation on advanced earth observation (EO) and data processing systems and their applications in a user-driven approach.

With 40 years of Meteosat observations over Africa, EUMETSAT is a key player in Europe-Africa cooperation, delivering crucial information for African weather and climate services.

EUMETSAT has been collaborating for more than 20 years with the European Commission and multiple African institutions to ensure access to satellite data and strengthen African capacities to exploit these data and provide added-value services to various socio-economic sectors.

For the next two decades EUMETSAT’s Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellites will produce unprecedented observations. Coupled with the EU’s Copernicus programme, MTG will greatly contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals and to the implementation of the African Union Agenda 2063.

In light of the opportunities offered by EUMETSAT’s upcoming programmes, the renewal and fostering of European and African cooperation in this domain is of paramount importance. By expanding the use of digitalisation technologies in Africa, the cooperation can ensure that Africa fully benefits from MTG and the evolving Copernicus mission in support of the green transition.
