The LI MAG meeting #16 was devoted to:

  • Communicating to the LI MAG members the status of the MTG programme and of the MTG LI Commissioning.
  • Reporting on LI Level 0, Level 1b, and Level 2 data-monitoring and performance assessment during Commissioning.
  • Discuss the results obtained by the LI MAG in the context of the LI Commissioning.
  • Discuss relevant science activities in the context of LI Commissioning and future applications of LI data.

Objectives and outcomes

  1. Communicating to the LI MAG members the status of the MTG programme and of the MTG LI Commissioning.

The objective was accomplished by having key people from ESA and EUMETSAT presenting the status of the MTG programme, ground segment procurement, and MTG-I1 (both FCI and LI) Commissioning.

  1. Reporting on LI Level 0, Level 1b, and Level 2 data-monitoring and performance assessment during Commissioning.

The objective was accomplished by having the LI Science Team presenting: i) the details of the routine monitoring of the LI instrument at Level 0 with examples of specific Commissioning operations and ii) the up-to-date results on the lightning performance assessment at Level 1b and Level 2 in comparison to GLD360 and GLM16.

  1. Discuss the results obtained by the LI MAG in the context of the LI Commissioning.

The objective was accomplished by having the chair of the LI MAG Board presenting the up-to-date results of the performance assessment of LI Level 1b data so far delivered by EUMETSAT.

  1. Discuss relevant science activities in the context of LI Commissioning and future applications of LI data.

The objective was accomplished by having two external experts presenting possible future activities that would make use of LI Level 1b and Level 2 data in the field of: i) wildfire initiation through lightning strokes, and ii) radiometric characterization of LI measurements by means of well-characterized radiometers on LEO platforms.
