Meteosat-12 became fully operational today, and the satellite has been renamed from MTG-I1 to mark the occasion.

This week’s image of the week is of the Earth as seen from the vantage point of geostationary weather satellites 36,000km above our planet.

Typhoon Man-yi passed over the Philippines bringing heavy rain, strong winds (up to 185 kmh) and tidal surges. The storm caused extensive flooding and landslides and uprooted many trees and damaged homes and power lines, leaving hundreds of cities without electricity.

The typhoon is the sixth major storm to hit the Philippines in less than a month.
