The PV 2015 Conference welcomes you to its eighth edition, to be held 3-5 November 2015 in Darmstadt (Germany), organised by EUMETSAT .

Previous events were held at:

  • CNES in Toulouse (PV 2002)
  • ESA-ESRIN in Frascati (PV 2004)
  • DCC in Edinburgh (PV 2005)
  • DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen (PV 2007)
  • ESA-ESAC in Madrid (PV 2009)
  • CNES in Toulouse (PV 2011)
  • ESA-ESRIN in Frascati (PV 2013)

For its eighth edition, the conference series moves to EUMETSAT in Darmstadt/Germany to continue addressing prospects in the domain of data preservation, stewardship and value adding of scientific data and research related information.

“Standards for Archives and Interoperability enabling new added value services”

An end-to-end management approach for the long term data preservation is key to ensure that there is no loss of information and data. It also entails the access to the archived data – including discovery, metadata, formats and interoperability considerations with the relevant standards – as well as the curation processes aimed at improving the information content and the usability of the archived data.

Archived data is not static, changes are taking place and need to be managed while operations are on-going. Amongst other initiatives, archives have started to gather user feedback on the data accessibility and added feedback to the metadata. Archived data is being reprocessed with an enhanced understanding of instruments and scientific processes, improving the quality of the data and the benefit to the user community. Persistent identifiers are added to archived data sets, enabling their publication, citation and creating a traceable chain to scientific articles, thus enhancing the usability and accessibility. Initiatives are under way to certify data and/or long term archives.

The PV 2015 Conference in Darmstadt/Germany is organised by EUMETSAT and provides a forum to discuss the many challenges organisations are faced today with rapid growth of data and topics around data preservation, value adding and interoperability. During the three days of the PV 2015, participants will have the opportunity to share knowledge experience and lessons learnt in these fields and network with colleagues.

The objectives of the conference are:

  • Share knowledge, experiences, lessons learnt and best practices as well as foster Cooperation in the area of Data Preservation and archived data Stewardship
  • Address prospects in the domain of high volume, high-velocity, high-variety scientific and technical data preservation together with value adding to these data
  • Provide a forum for organisations dealing with preservation of own data and value adding to present the status of their activities, plans and expectations

Session 1:  Data Stewardship approaches to ensure long-term data and knowledge preservation

  • Data and knowledge preservation policies and approaches
