The objective is to further explore the methodological advances in the validation and application of global satellite soil moisture datasets.

With this workshop we would like to bring satellite soil moisture users and developers together, and focus on both the derivation and exploration of soil moisture from both passive and active microwave satellite missions.

The workshop will deal with the following (research) questions:

  • What is the quality of the current satellite products and what can we expect in the near future?
  • Who is using satellite soil moisture data and for what purpose?
  • What are the main limitations of satellite soil moisture data from a users perspective?

The following themes will be addressed during the workshop:

  • Current and future satellite missions
  • Satellite soil moisture products:
    • status and algorithm development;
    • spatial and temporal satellite validation;
    • data assimilation;
    • hydrological applications.
  • Land-atmosphere processes
  • Climate studies
  • Socio-economical impact studies.

Important dates:

Registration opening: January 2014

Abstract submission closure: 31 March 2014
