The Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) is the primary payload for NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-series (GOES-R).

The ABI incorporates many new technologies to meet the more demanding NOAA Consolidated Observation Requirement List (CORL). The first of this new generation GOES was launched on 19 November 2016, and became GOES-16 when it reached orbit on 29 November 2016.

The GOES-R program and international partners want to see how GOES-R ABI meets these performance expectations. This presentation offers results from ongoing GOES-16 ABI validation activities that will start to answer these questions.

Dr Bob Iacovazzi, Jr

Bob currently works as a Calibration Engineer at the NOAA/NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). He has supported GOES-R calibration/validation management and technical efforts for more than a decade.

The purpose of his visit to EUMETSAT was to share some of his knowledge about GOES-R, to learn from the many activities associated with current MTG cal/val preparations, and to offer some results of the GOES-16 ABI on-orbit checkout performed by the GOES-R Calibration Working Group members at STAR.
