Conference topics range from storm dynamics, microphysics and electrification to forecasting, nowcasting and the detection of storms by radar and satellite. The main subjects also include the climatology of severe weather, societal impacts as well as assessment and mitigation of risks.
The week‐long conference takes place at a European venue every two years and is organised by the European Severe Storms Laboratory (ESSL). It provides a key forum for severe storm experts to meet in Europe and offers important insights into the severe storms community.
Participants range from European researchers (including many national meteorological and hydrological services), researchers from the United States and other countries, including many lead scientists in the field. Additionally, representatives from weather services, the reinsurance sector, manufacturers of meteorological measurement equipment and software as well as the media have taken part in the conference.
A key focus of this year’s conference is the use of MTG imager and lightning data for better understanding and predicting severe storms. A training event for participants on the practical use of MTG data is part of the conference.
